Flynne Bloomfield

Full Name: Flynne Scarlet Bloomfield (The One & Only! lol)

Gender: Female

Age: 14

Height: ‘5“7

Physical Appearance: shiny, long, curly cinnamon-red hair, bright green-and-gold eyes, fair-skinned, light smattering of freckles across her cheeks and nose, athletic teen body-type.

Animal Form: slim, red fox with sleek fur.

What’s their role in your story? Main character, side character, etc.? Flynne is the final Main Character in The Secret of Moonflower Valley. She is strong, independent, and one of my favorite characters. She is the other end of the bridge that connects all my characters and the reason why any of them set off on the quest to begin with!

What is their greatest desire? Something they’d give anything to have? Flynne would give anything to save her parents from Oleander’s grasp. She even sneaks past guards in Moonflower Valley to reach Clementine and Citrine!

Do they have a dream job? If not, how do they feel about not knowing what they want to be when they grow up? Flynne is going to be a warrior like her dad when she’s older. She already knows that she loves to fight, and her home needs all the great warriors it can get.

Can they fight? With or without weapons? Flynne learned how to use shooting stars (a weapon unique to the Southern Pack) with her dad, who is a warrior for the Southern Pack. She has near perfect aim and wouldn’t hesitate to defend herself in battle.

Are they left or right handed? Or are they ambidextrous? Flynne is left-handed, as is 90% of the humanimal population.

How strong are they, both physically and mentally? Physically, Flynne is one of the strongest characters in my group. Because of her love of running, she’s developed almost wolf-like stamina and can run faster than most foxes when on All-Fours. Of course, her speed is irrelevant when she’s traveling in a group…

What do you, as the author, want to happen to them by the end of the story? (Character arcs, new friendships, revelations, etc.) I want Flynne and Clementine to become best friends, mirroring the relationship I have with mine. They tell each other everything, give each other the best advice they can, or even just a shoulder to lean on when things are rough. Besides this, Flynne will also truly learn the importance of teamwork. All her life she’s looked out for Flynne and Flynne only. (Hence the ‘Flynne the One and Only’. See what I’ve done?!?!?! Sometimes I feel so clever…) Her parents give her all the freedom she could want, and since she’s an only child she’s never really had anyone else that she absolutely must look out for. In the middle of the book (starting at the rising action, if you will), Flynne will struggle with adjusting to teamwork. It’s just so different from how she normally operates, and she needs to find her footing in this new team.

What do they do in their spare time? In her spare time, Flynne visits Clementine and the Larkspur siblings. But apart from that, she explores the forest alone and practices her aim and fighting skills with her shuriken. She also forages for herbs and medicinal plants that she can make into poultices, salves, or tinctures. She’s extremely active and always on the move!

If this character kept reliving the same exact day over and over and over again, (like the events of the movie ‘Groundhog Day’), what would they do? Hm… what would she do if it had no lasting consequences…? Flynne would go on a great big adventure each day. She’d stay out past nightfall and climb the Eastern Mountain range, set foot in Moonflower Valley and explore as much as she could, and maybe even go white-water rafting. (If she could find/make a raft, that is…)

Does this character keep a journal? What do they write in it? She sure does. Flynne keeps a field journal and writes down everything she learns about the Black Forest, Moonflower Valley, and even other, further kingdoms. She has all sorts of notes, drawings, and lists inside. I have yet to create her journal myself, but when I do, pages will be featured on my blog!

Does this character know how to dance? Do they enjoy dancing? No. No, no, and no. To everything. Just no.

Would you and this character get along in real life? I think so! As long as she cares enough to stop and chat, that is!

Who do they look up to? Their older brother or sister, a parent, a celebrity? What do they like about them? How did this person earn their respect? Flynne truly admires Atlas, a great explorer who drew hundreds of maps and discovered a lot of new species of animals in his time. He’s been all over the continent and even founded Cactusflower, the desert kingdom of Reverie Realm.

Do they like little kids (or just regular kids, depending on how old they are), or do they find them annoying? Flynne finds little kids highly annoying, though Moonshine is the exception. They just seem to always need something from other people, and can’t keep up as well as kids her own age.

Are they introverted, extroverted, or the perfect introvert + extrovert  salad? With a little weirdness dressing? Flynne is an ambivert. She enjoys solitude and is fine on her own, but also likes to hang out with her friends. She doesn’t exactly find it easy to make new friends, but that’s usually because of her high standards!

Do they have siblings? Are they the oldest, youngest, or somewhere inbetween? How does their role in their family affect the way they act? Flynne is an only child, and it definitely shaped her into how she acts. Like I’ve said before, she’s very independent, carries her own weight, etc. etc. etc.

Are they married or in a relationship? Do they plan on getting married in the future? She hasn’t thought too far into the future, but there is this one boy she likes…

Do they have pets, or want any? Flynne has a small, rust-colored, lizard-sized dragon named Flame. She’s had him for three years, and hatched him herself from his egg which she found abandoned in her backyard.

Do they have a favorite animal? No, she likes them all equally.

What does this character do in response to things they’re afraid of, whether it be public speaking, spiders, water, etc.? Do they try their best to avoid it? Have a panic attack? Take a deep breath, keep calm, and face it? Do they have any other methods? Flynne doesn’t let herself freak out when she gets scared. Her fear is meant to keep her safe, not petrify her. When she’s scared, she takes a deep breath and evaluates the situation.

What does this character think and do when they see their own reflection? Do they stop and fix their hair, wink at themselves, wrinkle their nose, shudder, etc.? When Flynne sees her reflection, she tends to give herself a once over and a small smile before returning to doing whatever it is she was before.

How does this character act when they get sick? Do they suck it up and refuse medicine, rest, and TLC? Do they drop everything and cuddle up under the blankets until they're better? Or do they embellish their suffering and become a pain to take care of? Flynne lets her mom, who is one of the town’s healers, treat her and usually stays within the South Pack until she’s 100%.

Has this character ever been attacked by an animal? If so, what kind of animal was it? What happened? When Flynne was twelve years old, she was attacked by a young badgerwolf. It was trapped in a thorn bush—how it got there was beyond her—and she took pity on the poor creature. So she freed it, and in addition to the splinters she got, it bit her hand while it was escaping. (Well, good deeds never go unpunished, you know.)

What would this character do if there was a bug—or a snake—inside their dwelling space? Would they scream and run away? Call their mom, dad, brother, sister, significant other, etc. to remove it from the premises? Would they glance at it and pick it up (or kill it) and then put it where it belongs? Flynne really couldn’t care less about bugs and rodents—unless they’re venomous or rabid, of course, she grabs them barehanded and sets them loose outside.

How does this character act in social situations? Are they the life of the party? Do they stick around their friends or siblings? Flynne keeps to herself or her parents, sometimes even relatives, and always has fun at festivals and markets. She doesn’t have many—well, any—friends in the South Pack outside of the girls in her track team, but she isn’t lonely.

Does this character participate in any form of sports? Are they only doing it because their parents or friends pressured them into it? Do they enjoy sports? Flynne loves to run and is a part of her town's track team. She's one of the fastest on her team and runs to visit Clementine and the Larkspurs multiple times a week!

Is this character a hugger? Why or why not? Flynne is more reserved when it comes to physical affection. She rarely initiates a hug but will usually tolerate one from Clementine or the Larkspur siblings.

What does this character do when they get tired and they’re around people? Do their eyes start fluttering closed? Do they take long blinks? Or is this tired character a nightmare to be around? Irritable, rude, a menace to society? Flynne's not too nasty, nor is she abnormally sweet. She's just Flynne minus the high energy. Her patience is usually shorter, though, but as long as nobody’s asking stupid questions she doesn’t snap.

Wow, I didn’t know half the things I wrote down before I did this. I was like “Hm, I wonder who Flynne looks up to in life,” and it was like she tapped me on the shoulder and gave me the answer. Thanks, Flynne!

After almost an entire year of maintaining a blog, the word “responsibility” has a new meaning. Fourteen-year-old Leah Larkspur spends her time writing, playing with her dog and two cats, thinking about writing, annoying her sisters, forgetting crucial pieces of plot, and correcting her friends’ grammar.
