What’s her role in your story? Main character, side character, etc.? Clementine is one of the Main Characters in ‘The Secret of Moonflower Valley’. She represents the open minded and unbiased aspects of equality, thus being one end of the bridge that reconnects the *Fox Packs with Moonflower Valley.
What is her greatest desire? Something she’d give anything to have? Clementine would risk her life to restore peace to her world and reunite the Fox Territories with Moonflower Valley.
Does she have a dream job? If not, how does she feel about not knowing what she wants to be when she grows up? Clementine loves to cook. She reads and follows recipes like they’re a bible and is currently working under her mother’s wing in the kitchens of the Summer Palace. She hasn’t yet entered an apprenticeship because she wants to have as much free time for as long as she can, but when her sixteenth birthday rolls around, she knows exactly what she’s going to do.
Can she fight? With or without weapons? Clementine can fight with her two daggers, Peril and Zaria, but the idea of actually hurting someone with them gives her a sick feeling in her stomach. (At the beginning of the story, at least. After a few days into fighting for her life, she understands that she shouldn’t hesitate to defend herself.)
Is she left or right handed? Or is she ambidextrous? Clementine is left-handed, as is 90% of the humanimal population.
How strong is she, both physically and mentally? Clementine has exceptional stamina but can’t run very fast. She’s also capable of lifting herself onto a tree branch that hangs above her head, even though she looks very unassuming. She's extremely determined, and once she sets her mind on something… well, good luck trying to get her to give up.
What do you, as the author, want to happen to her by the end of the story? (Character arcs, new friendships, revelations, etc.) I want Clementine to become friends with Sunray, but beyond that… man, these questions are real thinkers! I’ll circle back to this one… (Several days later) Okay, I’m ready. Clementine has been seeing the world through rose-colored glasses all her life, but can you blame her? Her kingdom is corrupt, her adopted sister’s parents died in a war six years ago, and the only places that she really feels at home in are either fictional, a kitchen, or out of bounds. (Not that that stops her.) She holds out the hope that everything will work out in the end—in her personal life and for the kingdom that she lives in. But over the course of the book, she’s forced to acknowledge that the world isn’t perfect, and that it isn’t working out its own problems. She wants peace and unity, but in order to get that, she needs to fight. By the end of the book, she’s still optimistic, but she’s been hardened by all the freaking terrifying things she’s experienced. So now when a battle is on the horizon, she’s the first to draw her blade.
What does she do in her spare time? Clementine can usually be found reading books in the beautiful gardens of Whisperwind Pastures—her family’s flower farm, which is run mostly by her dad—or can’t be found at all, because she’s wandering the countryside or exploring the Black Forest.
If she kept reliving the same exact day over and over and over again, what would she do? First, Clementine would travel to one of the Fox Territories and explore explore explore. Once she’s thoroughly satisfied with that, she’d get a crazy haircut, dye her hair, and (attempt to) tame a wild monster. Perhaps a velocistalion…
Does she keep a journal? What does she write in it? Clementine does not keep a journal. She’s never had one and the idea doesn’t really interest her.
Does she know how to dance? Does she enjoy dancing? YES! Clementine loves to dance, particularly ballroom dancing. She loves to dress up and the methodic sway of her body allows her to forget anything else going on in her life.
Would you and Clementine get along in real life? I'm finally at a place with her development that I would actually like to bring her over to my house. In the past, the idea of Clementine made me shudder. But no longer! We have lots in common and I would totally want to play a game of 20 Questions and Truth or Dare with her.
Who does she look up to? Her older brother or sister, a parent, a celebrity? What does she like about them? How did this person earn her respect? Wow. I came up with this question? Dang, girl. I’m not sure I know the answer to this one… Maybe… hm. Okay, here’s what I’ve got: Clementine looks up to her parents, Magnolia and Aster. They’ve taught her almost everything that she knows, and they question everything. It’s all rumors until proven otherwise.
Does she like little kids, or does she find them annoying? Clementine feels indifferent towards little kids. She finds them cute, of course, but they’re also loads of trouble! She’s fine with them so long as their parents are within shouting distance.
Is she introverted, extroverted, or the perfect introvert + extrovert salad? With a little weirdness dressing? Clementine is an extrovert and finds that making friends comes naturally to her. She’s very accepting of everyone and their unique personalities and quirks, no matter where they come from or how they grew up. She’s comfortable in group settings and loves to engage in conversation, whether it’s about something silly that animals have done or something serious—such as the war looming over my characters’ heads.
Does she have siblings? Is she the oldest, youngest, or somewhere inbetween? How does her role in her family affect the way she acts? Clementine has one little sister—although Citrine barely qualifies as a ‘little’ sister, seeing as she’s only a month younger than her. Being the oldest, she finds it easy to take charge and plan a course of action, but also knows when to step back and let someone else lead.
What is her unique relationship with each of her siblings? Well, she’s only just got one, and her and Citrine are like best friends. They tell each other everything, get into petty arguments one minute and act like angels the next, sit on the other’s bed while she cleans her room to keep her company, and Clementine rants about the books she’s read to Citrine. There are definitely moments when she wants to strangle her, but they couldn’t live without each other.
Is she married or in a relationship? Does she plan on getting married in the future? Clementine is, in fact, single. (For now, anyway.) I do have some ideas, but nothing is final yet, and I’ll let my characters write their own romances. (It just turns out better that way.)
Does she have pets, or want any? Clementine does not have any pets (yet) but she wants a phoenix. They’re just so adorable!! They do live for pretty long, though, so she’s not sure…
Does she have a favorite animal? She loves dragons—well, the small ones anyway. There are some that are big enough to burn down entire kingdoms—those can stay in the mountains, for all she cares.
What does Clementine do in response to things she’s afraid of, whether it be public speaking, spiders, water, etc.? Does she try her best to avoid it? Have a panic attack? Take a deep breath, keep calm, and face it? Does she have any other methods? Well, for one thing, she’s terrified of roosters. #FifthBirthdayPartyGoneWrong She definitely avoids the ones on her family’s farm!
What does she think and do when she sees her reflection? Does she stop and fix her hair, wink at herself, wrinkle her nose, shudder, etc.? When Clementine passes by a reflective object, she instinctively smooths out the top of her hair. If she's alone (or forgets that she isn't) she makes weird faces at herself and falls into deep, contemplating thoughts.
How does Clementine act when she gets sick? Does she suck it up and refuse medicine, rest, and TLC? Does she drop everything and cuddle up under the blankets until she’s better? Or does she embellish her suffering and become a pain to take care of? Whenever Clementine gets sick, she stays in her room, curled up beneath her blankets with her newest library books. Studies have shown that when she gets sick, she can read entire libraries' worth of books in just a week or two.
Has she ever been attacked by an animal? If so, what kind of animal was it? What happened? Clementine went to a petting zoo for her 5th birthday, and while she was there she wanted to pet the chickens. She was chasing them around until they hid behind the rooster, and he strutted up to her, stared her down, jumped and kicked her square in the stomach, thus toppling over young Clementine, ending the celebration, and giving one of my protagonists a crippling fear of roosters.
What would Clementine do if there was a bug—or a snake—inside her dwelling space? Would she scream and run away? Call her mom, dad, brother, sister, significant other, etc. to remove it from the premises? Would they glance at it and pick it up (or kill it) and then put it where it belongs? Haha! No. Clementine hates bugs and snakes when they’re inside her house. She dutifully crouches on a tall piece of furniture and waits for her sister, Citrine, to come and take care of it.
How does she act in social situations? Is she the life of the party? Does she stick around her friends or siblings? Clementine finds it easy to make friends, so whenever she goes to a party, regardless of if she knows anyone there or not, she has a great time and partakes in conversations that make her smile for as many as two weeks after the event.
Does Clementine know how to play a musical instrument? If so, what instrument does she play? Does she know how to sing? Does she perform for friends and family, or only play when she’s alone? Clementine doesn’t know how to play any musical instruments, but she can whistle and sing! That counts… right??
Does she participate in any form of sports? Clementine doesn’t play any sports—unless competitive cooking counts, that is.
Is she a hugger? Why or why not? Clementine loves hugs. She hugs her friends and family, and friends' friends and family, hello and goodbye. She enjoys expressing affection through physical touch and isn't shy. She would probably hug you, too, if you got to know her a little bit!
What does Clementine do when she gets tired but she’s around people? Do her eyes start fluttering closed? Does she take long blinks? Or is tired Clementine a nightmare to be around? Irritable, rude—a menace to society? Clementine slows down as her weariness hangs heavier on her. She acts pretty much the way she always does, but slower to catch a joke and less keen on her surroundings.
And that’s all for now! I hope you guys liked it and that you feel like you know Clementine better now. I certainly do!
*Note: For any members of The Ink Pot Club forum, I have decided to keep the Foxes. Elves are great and I love them, but the Foxes fit my story better and so they shall stay. Thanks for reading!
