Elvira’s Victory

Elvira’s Victory

Thousands of soldiers lay on the floor checkered with blood, dead. Of the opposing forces, only the king, Richard the third, was still standing. Such an ugly name.

My hands were heavy with the weight of the destruction I’d caused. A smile crossed my face as I commanded my knights to corner King Richard. There was no escape…

“Checkmate,” I told my sister, Mia. She’s a lousy chess player.

Out of nowhere, a pillow flew onto the board. How dare she! Alright, I still won. As I handed over her fifteen dead pieces, they came back to life in her hands. The board was no longer stained with blood, it was just wood once more.

That’s the beauty of chess. If only I could play with Jack instead…
